The Arcadia Park branch of the Dallas Public Library is a jewel in the modest Arcadia Park neighborhood of West Dallas. It nudges up against a greenbelt and connects to Arcadia Park Elementary School. If its interior seems almost like a sanctuary, it should be no surprise that its architect also designed nearby Santa Clara Catholic Church.

This branch is ten minutes from my home, and it is my favorite of the twenty eight branches to visit. As you can see in the photos, the floor to ceiling windows, curved wall, cozy chairs, and the wooded view are conducive to lingering a while with a book or magazine. The architectural frieze on the exterior wall is by Eliseo Garcia. It includes a family standing under a tree of learning.

When it was built in 2005 this branch was the first to be partnered with the Dallas Independent School District so that the facility serves both the adjacent elementary school and the general public. Since then other branches have established this relationship. It is a creative and economical solution to furthering literacy and education.

The Dallas Public Library system maintains late evening and weekend hours, although not each branch is open seven days a week, and the hours differ from branch to branch and day to day. Patrons can request any item in the system which will be delivered to the nearest branch free of charge. Unless they are in demand, items are automatically renewed. One can also do self check out at each branch. These kinds of services and the vast collection make the Dallas Public Library system an outstanding part of the community.
