Do you think you know everything there is to know about Las Colinas? Well, did you know the original name for this development in North Irving was El Ranchito de Las Colinas? That romantic sounding name actually means “the Little Ranch of the Hills”(bet ya didn’t know that 😊).
Las Colinas was the dream of a millionaire Texas cattle ranch king named Ben H. Carpenter. Ben accepted the mission of converting his family ranch into something Texas had never seen before. In the 1960s he had an idea to build and plan an entire self-containing town. He envisioned very upscale urban homes, office space, retail, and restaurants, that included its own public transportation. He did not want just any transportation, Carpenter wanted water taxies on a Riverwalk like the famous one in San Antonio. He wanted a state of art tram that would pick up residents in their condos and take them directly into one of the many buildings where they would be employed.
He had 12,000 acres to plan this dream on and he successfully accomplished his mission. In fact, Carpenter’s dream was one of the first planned communities in the United States. In 1972 his dream became a reality when he finally broke ground to build this legendary subdivision. By the early 1980s, Las Colinas was known as the largest mixed-used developments in the South. Carpenter planned so well he was able to attract powerhouse companies like IBM, Xerox, Kimberly-Clark, ExxonMobil, GTE Telephone (now Verizon), Zales and McKesson.
In 1976, Carpenter approached African wildlife artist Robert Glen to bring art and culture to this urban paradise. He wanted art that would represent the Texas cattle feel that the land stood on. The idea of magnificent mustangs came to mind. Glen spent a year researching and studying the history of the mustangs to better understand his subject. He discovered that mustangs in the United States today showed elements of crossbreeding, but in southern Spain he found a line of horse with the same pure bloodlines as the horses that the Spanish brought to America centuries ago. He used these horses as the models for his world-famous sculpture.
Today, Las Colinas is home to an urban minded resident who may prefer walking to an outdoor patio dining experience. There are three well known golf courses in this development and more restaurants than one could ever desire. Las Colinas is home to many world-renowned businesses. Their residents can enjoy the advantages of walking to their office and still take advantage of living a suburban country like North Texas.
Las Colinas has two school districts that cover their residents, they are Irving Independent School District and the award-winning Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD.
