If you are craving delicious Tex-Mex in a truly instagrammable restaurant then you need to check Mexican Sugar. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to visit the newly opened location in Uptown and everything about the experience didn’t disappoint.
Before arriving we made a reservation online and found plenty of parking options from the street, valet, and even a free garage when checking in with the restaurant. The entire space was beautiful from the indoor lounges to the upstairs outdoor seating there is truly not a bad seat in the house. Even the bathrooms were esthetically pleasing and you can tell that a lot of care went into the space and the menu.
Our hostess had us seated immediately and our waitress brought us fresh chips and their warm salsa to enjoy while we looked over the menu. All of their cocktails sounded amazing but we ultimately decided on the Machete and Frozen mango margarita. Our drinks not only looked amazing but also tasted just as good! We loved that the Machete had a sweet and spicy flavor and the concoctions of serrano-influenced tequila, watermelon, cucumber and mint all worked beautifully together.
In addition to our cocktails, we started off our meal with the guacamole and queso appetizer. It was hard to chose a favorite amongst the two and were both quite filling. We loved the creamy texture of both options and how they complimented the crispy salty chips.
For our main dishes we choose the pescado tacos that came with grilled stripe bass, kale jicama slaw, avocado spread, lime crema and pico de gallo. The fish was cooked to perfection and all the condiments gave it a bright and refreshing bite. The tortillas also held up to the weight of all the ingredients, making it easy to eat. We also enjoyed their chicken enchiladas that were topped with a spicy mixture of salsa verde and rojo that gave them a kick. Each entrée was also served with beans and jasmine rice that was a fun twist on a classic Mexican rice.
We were truly stuffed by the end of the meal and were extremely impressed by the food, drinks and atmosphere. They definitely earned 5 stars in my book and I look forward to returning soon to check out more of their delightful menu.
