If you are a pizza lover like me, you know that finding good quality pizza can be hard in the DFW area. A Metroplex that isn’t famous for its style of dough has a multitude of restaurants trying out their takes of stuffed, New York, Detroit, New Haven, pan, deep dish, and more, but what if I told you I found a place that truly does justice to New York and Chicago tavern style? Located in Fort Worth near the south side, you can find the newly opened One Trick Pony Pizza Tavern. Opened by the owners of Heim BBQ you know that you will find quality and delicious bites and as a Chicago expat I feel like I have the knowledge to report that this place is a must try.
This place is just starting to get some buzz and for good reasons. Their small dining space is cozy and will have you feeling like you are dining at a friend’s place. With the beautiful decor and homey atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to dine with friends or for a special date night experience. Since the dining space is small, I would highly recommend getting a reservation as they can’t always accommodate walk-ins especially weekend timeslots. Upon arriving at the restaurant, the friendly hostess greeted us and quickly got us seated at our reserved table. Our waitress came by with cold water and gave us a few minutes to look over their cocktail menu that included classics and some fun takes on vegetable martinis. I knew I wanted something refreshing for the warm evening and tried their Black Cherry Chilton which came with Blackland vodka, Luxardo Cherry, lemon and topo chico. Not only was the cocktail visually beautiful, but the flavors were light and fruity and exactly what I was expecting. My partner enjoyed their classic old fashioned that had a delicious mix of bitters, bourbon, and flamed orange peel.
We skipped out on ordering appetizers as we knew we wanted to try both of their specialty styles. For the New York style crust, we ordered Daryl Strawberry that came with a vodka sauces, shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, red pepper flakes, and a Calabrian chili oil that was the perfect bite for someone who loves spice. For our tavern style crust I went with the Big Hurt that felt classic Chicago with pomodoro sauce, shredded mozzarella, Italian sausage, hot giardiniera, and topped with pecorino and oregano. Both pizzas were delivered tableside fresh from the oven and looked almost too good to eat. I loved the mix of flavors from both pizzas, but my favorite was definitely the tavern style that brought me back to my hometown. The entire experience here from the wonderful hospitality of the entire staff to the tasty food and drinks made our first visit 10 stars. I look forward to returning again soon to enjoy this delicious spot.
